The use of the trace element content of sedimentary pyrite as a
proxy for the trace element composition of past oceans has recently
emerged. The pyrite proxy has several potential advantages over
bulk sample analysis: preservation through metamorphism; little
dilution during analysis (samples are ablated not dissolved,
allowing for the less abundant elements commonly held in the
sulfide fraction to be investigated as proxies); accurate
measurement of several elements simultaneously; the ability to
screen sediments for hydrothermal overprint; and the technique can
give information regarding trace element availably at multiple
stages of diagenesis. Because of these multiple strengths, the
pyrite trace element proxy is a valuable potential addition to the
paleo-ocean chemistry tool kit.
In this powerful and passionate critique of the 'war on terror' in
Afghanistan and its extensions into Palestine and Iraq, Derek
Gregory traces the long history of British and American
involvements in the Middle East and shows how colonial power
continues to cast long shadows over our own present. This work:
argues that the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon
on September 11 activated a series of political and cultural
responses that were profoundly colonial in nature; presents the
first analysis of the 'war on terror' to connect events in
Afghanistan, Palestine, and Iraq; traces the connections between
geopolitics and the lives of ordinary people; and, is richly
illustrated and packed with empirical detail.

How should we speak of bodies and souls? In Coming to Mind, Lenn E.
Goodman and D. Gregory Caramenico pick their way through the
minefields of materialist reductionism to present the soul not as
the brain's rival but as its partner. What acts, they argue, is
what is real. The soul is not an ethereal wisp but a lively
subject, emergent from the body but inadequately described in its
terms. Rooted in some of the richest philosophical and intellectual
traditions of Western and Eastern philosophy, psychology,
literature, and the arts as well as the latest findings of
cognitive psychology and brain science - Coming to Mind is a subtle
manifesto of a new humanism and an outstanding contribution to our
understanding of the human person. Drawing on new and classical
understandings of perception, consciousness, memory, agency, and
creativity, Goodman and Caramenico frame a convincing argument for
a dynamic and integrated self capable of language, thought,
discovery, caring, and love.
